Pediatic Nephrology

Pediatric Nephrology is the medical specialty that diagnoses and treats children who have diseases related to the urinary system and which may include dysfunctions or pathologies of the kidneys, ureters, urinary bladder, or urethra.

Main Pathologies/diseases:

• Neurogenic Bladder;
• Renal Calculi (renal lithiasis);
• Bedwetting;
• Glomerulopathies;
• Arterial Hypertension;
• Urinary Tract Infection;
• Chronic Renal Insufficiency (chronic kidney disease);
• Single Kidney;
• Nephrotic Syndrome;
• Tubulopathies (renal tubular acidosis).

Common Symptoms

Although there could be several symptoms, parents should be aware of the following manifestations:

• The child who spends several hours without going to the bathroom (more than 6 hours) or goes at very short intervals and at all times;
• If the urine flux is weak or uneven;
• If the child has pain or burning when urinating, even after treatment for urinary infection;
• If urine produces foam, bleeding or visible particles such as sand;
• If there is a history of cysts in the kidney or family history of  kidney disease in the family (hereditary).

There are other signs that can serve as an alert to the doctor, such as high blood pressure or certain laboratory results.
